We’ve got the latest on Nom Nom for all her friends and followers! Sorry for the lapse between updates – it’s been busy around the clinic lately. (If you need to get caught up on her story, check out previous blogs!) Nom Nom is continuing to do well in her recovery. She has graduated from her cage in the boarding room to a cage in our kitchen/office area. She is really enjoying her new living space because she gets LOTS of attention there! She is still as sweet as ever, adn we have discovered that she seems to have a real affinity towards dogs! She is enjoying taking her daily walks and is even learning how to play like a normal kitten! She still has a bit of a hitch in her gait, which will likely be permanent, but she doesn’t let it get her down!

Nom got her legs x-rayed again last week and there is noticeable healing going on! Her left leg is looking pretty good, but her right leg still has a way to go. She will likely get x-rayed again in 2 – 3 weeks and hopefully be able to get the pins removed shortly after. At that point, she will probably go home with one of our staff for a few weeks to get acclimated to living in a home. This will allow us to see how she handles walking on different types of flooring, climbing stairs, interacting with other pets, etc.

It’s Springtime here in Michigan which means the sun is shining and the flowers are blooming! This time of year, many people want to bring the beautiful weather inside and buy flowers to spruce up their homes. Unfortunately many varieties of flowers (including many popular in commercially bought boquets) can be toxic to cats. This blog is focusing on the dangers of lilies specifically, but for a comprehensive list of poisonous plants check out www.aspca.org/pet-care/poison-control/plants

Lilies are very popular in spring, especially the Easter Lily. They start showing up in mixed boquets, or as ornamental plants which are often given as gifts. These flowers are very beautiful, but can be downright deadly to a cat! Ingesting even small amounts, such as one leaf or flower, can cause acute renal failure. All parts of the lily plant are considered poisonous, and even licking lily pollen from a paw or drinking water from a vase of lilies can cause fatal renal disease.

Renal disfunction usually sets in within 48 hours of lily ingestion. Symptoms include lethargy, vomiting, loss of appetite, and rapid weight loss. If your cat is exhibiting these signs, or if you suspect that they may have eaten a lily, you should get the cat to a vet right away. The vet can run bloodwork to check for kidney failure and can start treatments if needed. The sooner treatments can be started, the better the cat’s chances for survival will be. The severity of the poisoning seems to vary widely from cat to cat, and there don’t seem to be any concrete identifying factors to know which cats will fare better and which will fare worse.

The best way to prevent your cat from being poisoned is to keep lilies out of your home. If your cat goes outdoors, you will want to be sure you know where it goes and whether there may be lilies in any of those areas. Be sure to inspect all mixed boquets carefully prior to purchasing to be sure they are lily free. Many flower shops will happily make lily free arrangements for cat owners and can suggest other beautiful springtime plants to replace lilies as gifts.

If you are still wanting more information about lily toxicity, Michigan Vet Specialists has an informative link on their website www.michvet.com/library/emergency_lily_toxicity.asp

It is estimated that over 50% of cats who

Our favorite little tortie is continuing to do well in her recovery, and is getting stronger everyday! (If you need to get caught up on Nom Nom’s story, check out her previous blogs www.annarborcatclinic.com/2012/03/nom-nom-week-2 )

This week was another eventful week for Nom Nom – she got spayed! We wanted to make sure the spay surgery was performed prior to her going into heat. She came through this surgery very well and is healing up nicely. While she was sedated, we were able to take an x-ray to check on the healing progression of her leg fractures. There is obvious new bone growth filling in around her pins! She is a long way from healed, but she is definitely heading in the right direction.

Saturday March 24th will mark 3 weeks since her leg surgery! She is keeping a wonderful attitude during recovery so far. She was able to move to a slightly larger cage in our boarding facility, so she can watch the birds and occasional squirrels out her window! She enjoys getting out for her (very) short excursions of walking around the clinic also! Hopefully, she will keep her sweet and social attitude through the upcoming weeks of continued cage confinement

We have had a few people ask about adopting Nom Nom already, so we want to clarify that she is NOT available yet. We will not be taking applications for adopting her until she has fully healed and is actually ready to go to a new home. In the meantime, feel free to ask about her progress if you’re curious!

Bette was abandoned by her owners shortly after giving birth to 6 kittens, but luckily she was rescued by a client of ours. Bette and her kittens were able to stay with the nice woman who saved them until the kittens were 8 weeks old. At that time, they all got to come to the clinic to be adopted into loving, permanent homes. Most of her kittens have already been adopted, and Bette is hoping that her turn will arrive soon!

Bette appears to be pretty young herself, probably just 2 – 3 years old. She is very sweet and affectionate. Bette seems fine with other cats, and should adapt well to most homes. Bette has been FELV/FIV tested negative, is current on vaccines, has had fecal testing and deworming, is current on flea and heartworm preventative, and will be spayed and microchipped prior to going to her new home. please stop in and get to know Alphabette!

He was found as a stray in Toledo with terrible skin issues. Poor Mr. Charlie had open sores and raw bald patches all over his body. He seemedto have had a bad allergic reaction to something and kept scratching at it. The constant scratching made the allergy areas turn into open sores and poor Mr. Charlie was pretty pathetic looking. Through all of that though – he was always as sweet as pie. He loves attention and affection!

After some anti-biotics and some anti-inflammatories, along with claw covers so he can’t scratch himself raw, Mr. Charlie is starting to look much better. We are pretty sure that he is feeling better too! Mr. Charlie appears to be about 3 – 5 years old and seems to be in pretty good health. We are hoping to determine the cause of his allergic reaction.

Mr. Charlie has not been with any other cats yet, due to his conditon, but he doesn’t seem bothered by seeing or smelling them. He will most likely acclimate well to any home. Please come meet Mr. Charlie!

True to her usual self, she is a rockstar and is recovering very well! (If you need to get caught up on her amazing story, check out her original blog at www.annarborcatclinic.com/2012/03/nom-nom-needs-friends )

Nom has been on cage confinement since her surgery and is being a very good sport about it. Sitting in a small cage with very little stimulation can get really boring really quickly! Since she has to be kept very quiet to help those fragile bones heal correctly, she isn’t even allowed to have toys right now We try to keep her as entertained as possible though, by keeping her caged in our hospital/surgical recovery area so she gets a lot of attention from our staff going in and out all day. She also has a fabulous view of our treatment areas, so there are always exciting things for her to watch. I’m sure it’s not as fun as playing with catnip mice and jingle balls, but we can be a pretty entertaining crew!

Since she is doing well, we are going to gradually start letting her have a bit more space, and occasionally even bring her out of her cage for (very) short periods of walking around. A little exercise can really stimulate the bones to mend quicker. Once she’s a bit stronger, she will get to move into a larger cage in our boarding room, and then she should be able to recieve visitors.

She is still eating with passion, and loves attention from all of us. She will purr and purr while being petted. She moves around a bit awkwardly, but doesn’t seem to be too uncomfortable. She’s a great little kitten! Fundraising for her costs is going well, we have raised just over $1000 so far. Donations are certainly still welcome in her name to cover the rest of the surgical costs, as well as her pain medication and recovery costs.
